What is an effective way to deal with bullies at work?

We often have to deal with bullies at work. Bullies who are peers are a definite challenge! You have no authority over them, you have to work with them, and you need to rely on them. What has been your experience with bullies who are peers?

One of the most effective ways to deal with bullies is to be assertive. Some thoughts on how to be effective with them:

1. Don't use email as a  vehicle for discussing your issues with them --- in person or phone is much more effective
2. Be clear about what you need and expect from them, using collaborative language
3. When you need to go up the food chain, make requests on the phone or in person -- don't complain about someone using email -- you never know who will get to see it!
